16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Have you ever stopped to wonder why God spoke from heaven that day? Well, it wasn’t for Jesus’ sake. Rather it was for the hearers sake, for your sake, and for my sake.
He spoke to confirm that this Jesus was the promised Messiah. This Jesus was the beloved Son of God who was born to save us from our sin. Essentially this is God saying, “Look no further! Here he is!” Sadly, we sometimes don’t want to associate with Jesus.
If associating with Jesus causes us embarrasment, we’d rather not. If we aren’t going to be part of the “cool” group because of Jesus, we’d rather not be associated with him. If our life is going well, we tend to forget about him and think we have it all under control. Then we become our savior. But look no further than Jesus.
He is your sin bearer. The one who took on all your sins. The one who saved you. The one who will give you eternal life. The one who gives you peace both now and forever. That’s what God wants you to know and so he spoke.
